Empire of the Sun artwork
This is an original, rolled, one-sheet movie poster from 1987 for Empire of the Sun starring Christian Bale, John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson and Joe Pantoliano. Steven Spielberg directed the film based on the novel by J.G. Ballard. John Alvin is the artist for the poster.
Some of the most moving evocations of the Great War were captured by commercial photographers who arrived in northeast France in the wake of the conflict, when people began travelling to the region in order to see for themselves the extent of the devastation of local villages, towns, and cities. There was enormous appetite for images recording the destruction, available in the form of cheap guidebooks and postcards.
Researching her series, Dewe Mathews worked closely with academics to locate the forgotten places along the western front where these unfortunate combatants had been shot. She then travelled to each spot and set up her camera there at dawn, recording whatever could be seen a century after the executions had taken place.
It may seem odd that these great works of art and literature took so long to emerge from the aftermath of the events they concern. But many of the most complex and considered accounts of conflict have taken their time. To Vonnegut’s painfully slow response to the war, for example, we might add Joseph Heller’s brilliantly satirical Catch-22, published in 1961, and, even more significantly, JG Ballard’s memorial masterpiece Empire of the Sun, which did not see the light of day until 1984.

In his film “Melancholia” (2011), Lars von Trier incorporated several artistic references. The most prominent is undoubtedly the film’s poster itself. Justine (Kirsten Dunst) gets married but is overtaken by deep melancholic feelings, consumed by apocalyptic thoughts. This characteristic scene from the film leads us back to the Romantic period, an artistic era rich with themes of melancholy and depression.
Such is the case with this scene from The President, whereby the set pieces and positioning of actress Jacoba Jessen reflect that of Whistler’s Mother. Dreyer was explicit regarding his admiration of Whistler, and the quiet intensity of this great artist’s work is repeated throughout the film.
This 1986 classic provides quite a different museum scene. During their self-inaugurated day off, Ferris, Cameron and Sloane head to the Art Institute of Chicago. Across a few shots, the museum’s extensive collection is seen on screen. Soon, the characters themselves become art-like, posing in perfect alignment with the rules of perspective.
William Friedkin’s ‘The Exorcist’ mirrors the paradoxical nature of René Magritte’s ‘The Empire of Lights’. The film’s play on light and darkness reflects Magritte’s exploration of reality and illusion, adding a surreal depth to the cinematic narrative.
